Craps Basics: Pass/Don't Pass Bets

Craps Don't Pass Odds Bet Poker

The long, curving section along the edge of the table closest to where the players stand is called the Pass Line.

'Pass Line' Bets

The most basic craps bet is the Pass Line bet. When you place a Pass Line bet, you're betting with the dice. In other words, you're betting that the either a 7 or an 11 will be the first number rolled (called the 'come out' roll). If this happens, you double your money right away. If a 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 is rolled, this establishes a 'point.' When a point is set, you want that number to be rolled again, before a 7 is rolled (when the shooter 'sevens out'). If the shooter rolls the point before he rolls a 7, you double your money.

The craps 'Free Odds' bet is unusual because it's the only bet on the table that doesn't have a house advantage. Yes, you read that correctlyzero house advantage. The odds bet will win if the point assigned to that odds bet rolls before the 7 rolls. For example, if the point is 8, and the 8 rolls before the 7 rolls, then the odds bet will win. If the 7 rolls before the 8 rolls, then the odds bet will lose. Odds bets can also be wagered on Come bets after the Come bet point has been established.

  1. If any number other than seven, eleven, or craps is thrown it becomes the Point.Once the Point is established, the Don´t Pass bet wins if the shooterthrows a 7 before making his point. However, if the shooter repeats his point, the Don´t Pass bet loses. Unlike the Pass Line wager, the Don´t Pass is not a Contract Bet.
  2. The Don't Pass bet is the opposite of the Pass-line bet. It's called wrong betting, and if you place this bet, you're a wrong bettor. This wager is a winner if the dice lose, but casinos—to maintain an edge over the house—either bar 2 or bar 12 from winning.
  3. This is one of the best bets craps players can make, with payout odds of 1 to 1. The don't pass bet has a slightly lower house edge (1.36%) but given 7 has a statistically higher chance of landing than 2 or 3, the odds of this bet winning are lower. The odds of rolling a 7 are 6 out of 36 possible combinations, or 1 in 6.

If the number rolled on the come out roll is a 2, 3, or 12 (called Craps), you lose. If, after a point is established, a 7 is rolled before the point number is rolled again, you also lose.

'Don't Pass' Bets

Craps Don't Pass Odds Bet Wins

Placing a Pass Line bet is betting with the dice, and placing a Don't Pass bet is betting against the dice. Pass Line bets are also said to be 'betting right,' while Don't Pass bets are said to be 'betting wrong.' (Not that either is any better or worse a bet than the other -- this is just craps jargon.) Don't Pass bets are just the opposite of Pass Line bets. Rather than hoping for a 7 or an 11 on the come out roll, you're hoping for a 2, 3, or 12 (the losing roll of Pass Line bets). A 2, 3, or 12 will double your money on a come out roll if you've placed a Don't Pass bet. When a point is established, rather than hoping that the point number will be rolled again before the 7 shows up, you're hoping that the point won't be rolled again before the 7 shows up -- if the 7 comes first, you win.

Not as many people put free odds behind come and don't come bets. Nevertheless, you can place odds behind both of these wagers.

The process works almost exactly the same as with pass line and don't pass line bets. The only difference is the nature of come and don't come.

Come and don't come bets have the same rules as pass line and don't pass line, respectively. The exception, though, is that you must wait for a point number to be established before making eitherof these wagers.

Here's an example of making a come bet.

  • The shooter rolls a 4, thus establishing a point
  • You make a come wager
  • The shooter's next roll now becomes the come out roll for your come bet
  • The shooter tosses a 6, thus establishing a point
  • You take odds on the 6, meaning that your potential payout and true odds are both 6:5

Essentially, come and don't come are like your own personal pass line and don't pass line wagers. You can make these bets any time after the shooter's initial point has been established and backthem with odds.

Many players stick to backing pass line and don't pass line with free odds because it's easy to do so at the start of a new shooter's round.

But the methodology for backing come and don't come bets with odds is almost the same. You just need to deal with more chaos since you're doing so in the middle of a shooter's turn.

When you do back come and don't come bets with odds, place your chips above the respective space. Also, notify the dealer so that they don't mistake your free odds for another come or don't comewager. Online casino no deposit bonus.
